Poland D visa: application, documents and appointment for Turkish citizens

If you are coming to Poland for longer than three months, you apply in Turkey for a national D visa. The form is filled in e-konsulat, the appointment and submission are at VFS Global, and the consul decides. For which purpose, when and with which documents to apply; what the D visa gives you and what it doesn't.

The first door to staying in Poland for longer than three months is the national visa obtained in Turkey (wiza krajowa, commonly the "D visa"). It is a different document from the short-stay Schengen visa: it is issued under Poland's own law, for a specific purpose and for at most one year. This article walks a Turkish citizen through the D visa application step by step: which purpose, which system, which documents, which calendar. If you have not yet chosen the basis behind the visa (employer, family, university, company), start with the four ways to move to Poland.

Short answer: You fill in the D visa form in the e-konsulat system, sign the printout and submit it in person with your documents at one of the VFS Global centres; Turkish citizens' work visa registration is also done through e-konsulat. You can apply no earlier than six months before travel. The visa is valid for at most one year and allows stays of 90 days in any 180 in other Schengen countries. The D visa is not a residence permit: to keep staying in Poland you need a separate residence application before the visa expires. The consul decides.

What the D visa gives you and what it doesn't

A national visa is for a stay in Poland longer than three months and up to one year. The visa is issued for a specific purpose, and that purpose matters: you cannot work on a visa issued for a purpose other than work, for example a tourist visa.

The D visa also lets you travel in Schengen countries outside Poland: up to 90 days in any 180-day period. But it does not do three things:

  • It is not a residence permit. Before the visa expires you must apply separately in Poland for a temporary residence permit (zezwolenie na pobyt czasowy); we cover the steps of that application in the first residence permit application article.
  • It does not replace the work permit. On the employer route the employer obtains the permit; the visa comes on top of it. The process is in the employer work permit article.
  • It does not guarantee entry. At the border the final decision is made by the Border Guard (Straż Graniczna).

Purpose: what the visa is issued for

Visa purposes are listed in Article 60 of the Act on Foreigners. Poland's missions in Turkey publish separate document lists for the D visa for these purposes: work, study (including Erasmus), internship, the European volunteering programme, language course, scientific research and visit. Which list you apply under follows from your basis in Poland: work if your employer has obtained the permit, study if you have been admitted.

A business-purpose visa has an extra rule: since 1 December 2023 the Embassy in Ankara and the Consulate General in Istanbul require one of two kinds of invitation with the application: an invitation entered in the voivode's register of invitations (ewidencja zaproszeń), or an invitation signed by an authorised person of the inviting party with the signature certified by a Polish notary.

Where and how to apply

  • Form: filled in in the e-konsulat system, printed and signed.
  • Registration and appointment: Turkish citizens register for a work visa through e-konsulat. The system releases work visa slots once a week: in the Istanbul consular district the order of registration decides, in the Ankara district a draw. For other purposes, appointments are booked on the VFS Global website.
  • Submission: documents are handed in person at a VFS Global application centre. For the Istanbul consular district: Istanbul, Izmir, Trabzon and Gaziantep; for the Ankara district: Ankara and Antalya. Applications sent by post, fax or email are not accepted.
  • Fee: according to the missions' page the visa fee is 235 US dollars, cash only, and it is not refunded if the visa is refused. The VFS service charge is not included.

When to apply, and when the decision comes

You can apply no earlier than six months before your planned travel. As a rule the consulate decides on a national visa within 15 days of the application; in justified cases this can be extended to 30 days. For study, scientific research, internship and volunteering visas the period is 30 days and runs from the day the application is complete with its documents.

These periods cover only the consular stage. On the employer route the work permit comes first, then the appointment, then the decision; the calendar is the sum of these three links. We don't give fixed dates.

Documents: common ones and purpose-specific ones

Documents common to every purpose on the missions' lists:

  • the form filled in on e-konsulat and signed, and a biometric photo (3.5 x 4.5 cm, taken within the last six months);
  • a passport issued within the last ten years, valid for at least three months after the visa expires, with at least two blank pages, and the passport record;
  • health insurance of at least 30,000 euros covering every day of the stay in Poland;
  • proof of residence address, full civil registry extract (tam vukuatlı nüfus kayıt örneği), criminal record certificate;
  • military service status certificate (except for those over 35 or those who document student status in Turkey);
  • proof of accommodation.

The work list adds: the original and a copy of the Polish work permit; a letter of invitation confirming the intent to employ, on company letterhead with the name and title of the signatory; vocational diplomas or qualification documents; the barcoded SGK service record (hizmet dökümü) and the employment start notice from your last job. If the visa application is made more than three months after the permit's validity starts, a scan of the employer's letter to the voivode and proof of the date it was filed are also required. Instead of health insurance, proof of registration and insurance with ZUS in Poland is also accepted.

The study list includes: the school's admission or continuation document, proof of payment if tuition applies, a language proficiency certificate, the last diploma, and proof of financial means covering living, housing and return costs.

A note common to the lists: documents should not be older than three months and must be submitted as original plus one copy. The consul may ask for additional documents and may invite you to an interview, but is not obliged to.

If the visa is refused

Against a refusal you file a request for reconsideration (wniosek o ponowne rozpatrzenie) with the same consul; the deadline is 14 days from delivery of the decision. The request is handed in at the VFS centre where you applied, after online registration. The refusal grounds are communicated to you, ticked on the decision form; the request is prepared starting from those grounds.

Why another Schengen country's visa is not a solution

Applying at another country's consulate with a tourism declaration while your real destination is Poland breaches the main-destination rule of the Schengen Visa Code: you apply at the mission of the sole or main destination of the visit. A false declaration of purpose can lead to refusal or annulment of the visa. We do not recommend or prepare this route. If you are going to stay in Poland, the right document is Poland's national visa.

Frequently asked

I have no job offer; can I apply for a D visa?

A visa is tied to a purpose and to that purpose's document: a work permit for work, admission for study, a registered or notarised invitation for a business visa. There is no document list for an application without a basis. We do not find jobs; if you have no basis, we only tell you in writing what the route is.

Can I go to other European countries on a D visa?

Yes; while the visa is valid you can stay in other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180. The certificate you receive after filing a residence application in Poland, however, does not allow travel; we put this difference into the calendar around your travel plans.

My visa is for one year; what happens next?

If you are going to keep staying in Poland, you file a temporary residence application by the last day of the visa. Since 27 April 2026 this is done only through the MOS system with an electronic signature; in practice that means a trusted profile tied to a PESEL number, or a qualified e-signature. This preparation needs to start in your first weeks in Poland.

How we run it

For people who have an employer, family, an admission or an established company in Poland, we run the visa file as a mechanism: we draw up the official document list for your purpose, check that the documents from Turkey and Poland are consistent with each other, close out the content of the letters coming from the employer or university against the list, fill in the e-konsulat form with you, and track the registration and the VFS appointment. When you arrive in Poland we set up the calendar for the residence application. The legal assessment is done by our immigration partner; the consul issues the visa and the voivode the residence permit. We do not guarantee outcomes.
